If you want to progress in the Hawaiian language…

Sep 01, 2023

Aloha mai,

In order to stay motivated and progress in the language you really need someone to speak with. (Even better if they speak the language a little more fluently than you). If you don’t have a member of your family or a friend to learn with, then find/go make a friend to practice with.

At the La Kuokoa Market last weekend, I spoke with Kapua. She took my beginner course and also has her brother to speak the language with (this has been a huge help to her progress), and she set a goal to speak as good as her brother. Teasingly, I told her something like, “I know your brother is a better speaker than you but WHEN you pass him, you’re going to have to find somebody else!”. I was (kind of) joking, and we had a good laugh.

If you want to learn the language, it’s a good idea to associate with those who know the language at least a little better than you do. It will push and stretch you!

When you have someone to progress with, you…

  • Motivate & encourage each other
  • Exchange knowledge and interests in the language
  • Share study habits and exercises that are helpful
  • Get a friend to practice speaking with

Consider setting a goal to find at least one person to practice with. Maybe set another goal to get to their level.

Then, if you’re really motivated, set another goal to surpass them! (Even if you can’t, go ahead and set a really high goal. That’s what I did, even though some of my mentors are way ahead of me!)

On another note, it was really good to walaau with everybody at the La Kuokoa Market last weekend. If you want to come cruz, this week I will be at Windward Community College on December 7, 2022 from 5pm-9pm.

Na'u iho no,

Malu
