If you want to perpetuate Hawaiian language, this one is for YOU…

Sep 04, 2023

Aloha,

If you’re feeling the excitement of perpetuating the Hawaiian language, I’ll tell you right now, you’re in the right place.

I’ve really been enjoying interacting with you folks here online and also in person at workshops and local events. It’s encouraging to see how passionate you are about learning the language.

A lot of you have taken my Hawaiian language courses, and if you haven’t yet, that’s okay, I know you will when you’re ready. However you’re learning, I hope you maintain that excitement and motivation to keep going.

I’m noticing a few patterns I wanted to bring to your attention this month and offer some suggestions that will help you balance your enthusiasm to perpetuate Hawaiian language with realistic expectations.

  1. Be patient. You’re not going to pick up the language overnight, but if you’re consistent I know it will pay off and you’ll be really proud of yourself.
  2. Stay in your own lane. While you’re learning, focus on learning - don’t get caught up in trying to teach while you’re in the middle of it.
  3. Learn from credible resources. I have a list of them on my website, and I’ll dive into some of them in my emails this month.

Don’t miss my emails this month. Get ready to think about things in a new way and ask your questions. These are things to be aware of and have conversations about because they will really help you effectively perpetuate the language.

Owau iho no,

Malu
