How would you say “have a nice day” in Hawaiian?

Sep 01, 2023

Aloha,

How would you translate “have a nice day” into Hawaiian? Would you literally translate each word? (No). Or would you translate the idea? (Yes).

In this month’s emails, we’ll talk more about translation. And I don’t mean literally translating each individual word from English into Hawaiian.

Understanding the mindset behind the Hawaiian language is going to help you effectively translate from English to Hawaiian and vice versa.

The way to accurately “output” or express yourself in Hawaiian, is to “input” as much Hawaiian as you can.  Read, listen, and watch native speakers any chance you get. You can’t express or perpetuate what you don’t know.

We will go over popular English and Hawaiian phrases and talk about how to effectively and appropriately translate them. Keep this in mind, "unuhi" has varrying meanings. It can mean to translate, but it isn't limited to or confined to that one definition.

Know that you’ll receive these emails on Wednesdays. If you want to improve your Hawaiian, don’t miss them.

Na'u iho no,

Malu
