Years ago I wanted to know what the Hawaiian word for selfish was and learned that there is no one word equivalent in Hawaiian. Like so many other words, I had first understood what selfish meant at its core and then found the word(s) in Hawaiian that best fit. That’s how I learned another meaning for the word noonoo. 

Noonoo has multiple uses and really understanding this word will help you better express yourself in Hawaiian.

Noonoo wale no oia ia ia iho—He only thinks of himself (he’s selfish).

I ko’u noonoo—In my opinion (to my thinking).

Aole makou i noonoo i ke kala—We didn’t consider the money.

Kauka hooponopono noonoo—A doctor who helps mental regulation (psychologist).

Ua noonoo iho la au i ko’u wa liilii—I reflected on my childhood.
