🍜Do you know if this is a Pidgin or Hawaiian?

Sep 04, 2023

Aloha no kakou a pau loa,

“You ready for kaukau?”

We were at a family member’s house and they had made some food and this is what they asked my kids.

My kids were confused and didn’t understand what was being said. I explained that “kaukau” is a Pidgin word that often gets mistaken for Hawaiian, but that’s not what we say in our home.

The correct Hawaiian word for “eat” is ai or sometimes paina.

For example:

E hele kakou i ka paina—Let’s go eat.

E hele mai e ai—Come eat!

Like Maya Angelou said, “Do the best you can until you know better. Then when you know better, do better.”

The next time we went over to this family member's house, they still asked if my kids wanted to kaukau.🤦🏾shame

Oh well, I tried. We just do the best we can, yeah?

Me ka oiaio,
