Do you know how to use this word?

Aloha pumehana kakou,

I want to help you broaden your ability to express yourself in Hawaiian.

When I was learning the language, I would get confused about how to use plenty of the traditional words and phrases I came across because they are used in ways that, as English speakers, we wouldn’t think of.

Once you are made aware of the key to developing a profound understanding of traditional words, it will begin to set your English thinking mind free. As you listen to native speakers and read traditional Hawaiian literature, your understanding will deepen.

In the examples below, notice that there are several different words used in English for these expressions, but komo is used for them all. Not uncommon when comparing the two languages.

  • Ua komo au i ko’u lole.— I put on my clothes.
  • Ua komo na keiki i loko o ke kai.— The kids got into the water (ocean).
  • Ua komo oia i ka ekalesia.— He joined the church.
  • Ua komo ke kui i ka papa laau.— The nail penetrated through the wood board.
  • Ua komo mai la keia manao i loko o’u.— This thought came to me.

After reading this, I hope you will be more conscious of a more Hawaiian way to express yourself.

E hoomau aku no,

Malu
