Do THIS as fast as you can to improve your Hawaiian…

Sep 04, 2023

Aloha mai kakou i keia pule nei no,

When was the last time you read a newspaper? 🗞️

What about a newspaper clipping in Hawaiian? If it’s been awhile, and you want to improve your language skills, I suggest you get used to it.

This week, I’m giving you a newspaper clipping to read - but hang on, I want you to improve your reading ability so, read it twice.

  • First time, speed read as fast as you can. (Don’t worry about what you don’t know.)
  • Second time, really dissect it and look up the words you don’t know. Try to figure out what’s going on in the news clipping.

BONUS CHALLENGE (this is for those of you who really want to improve your Hawaiian), record yourself reading. Just get out your phone and record yourself on video or a voice memo.

(No promises, but maybe next week I’ll send you an audio clip of me reading it so you have a reference point.)

Something that was helpful for me when I was learning new words, and what I suggest to you, is to research a topic you’re interested in.

For example, if you’re interested in agriculture then look up terms like kalo, loi, or wai.

Another example, I have a friend who is a lawyer and is interested in that kine stuff, so he might look up the word loio (lawyer) or related terms. He may already be familiar with those terms and find the newspaper clipping really interesting. For some people, reading documents that lawyers put out would be so boring, but my friend might actually enjoy that because it’s relatable to his life.

So what are you interested in? Hit reply and tell me the words or terms you’re going to look up this week.

Aloha,

Malu
