Aloha,
Let’s talk about the word, “hauoli”. Do you already know what it means?
Hauoli means “joy, delight and happiness”…
…which is something everyone is trying to find in different ways.
Some people are trying to make plenty money, indulge in vices, achieve high status at work or school, and even presenting a certain image to the people around them, hoping that will bring them happiness, but to be honest, those are often just temporary solutions. What we really want is to find things that are more substantial and will make us happy long-term.
Obviously, no one is looking for sadness, depression or trauma. We naturally want to be happy and content and it’s common knowledge that you get the best results when you’re in a good place.
Finding lasting happiness and joy in life should be more important than most other things we’re after, and it’s worth our time and effort to figure it out.
As you’re learning the Hawaiian language, let’s prioritize your happiness and well-being.
If you make sure that you’re happy and mentally sound, then the language will come easier. If you are in a time of anxiety, depression or trauma - understandably, it will affect what and how you’re learning. If you can address those things and take care of them - this will have a profound impact on your life. If you cannot address every thing right now, maybe learning the language turns into a safe haven - a space where you can take on a challenge that will bring satisfying results.
After all, that’s what we’re all trying to find - joy & happiness.
There's also another meaning for “hauoli” that people don’t know. When people want to say, “I’m excited to see you”, they often use the word “pihoihoi”. For example, “Pihoihoi au i ka hui ana me oe”.
What you want to say is, “Hauoli au i ka hui ana me oe”.
You deserve to have happiness and all the good that comes with it.
me ka oiaio no,
Malu
